Username: Belle_Aire_GirlLocation: Spokane, Washington Tell us something about yourself:I'm married with two adorable boys, ages 3-1/2 and newborn. I feel so lucky to have married my husband; not only is he a great guy, he's incredibly supportive of my crazy, papercrafting addiction! Although I was born and raised in Boise, Idaho, I spent many of my adult years in the South. So you may occasionally hear me slip and say "ya'll". However, i am thrilled that we were able to move back to the Northwest several years ago and love being close to family in Boise and Portland. I'm so excited to be a part of the Craft Warehouse design team. So excited in fact, that it sent me into labor - literally! The evening after I received the design team call, I went into labor and our second son was born early the next morning. I'm definitely going to have to scrapbook that story! After a career in engineering and finance, I'm thrilled to stay at home full time with our sons. Papercrafting is a great creative outlet and stress reliever for me. Besides papercrafting, I enjoy cooking and baking; spending time with my girlfriends; traveling; and my guilty pleasure of watching crime solving and reality TV shows.
How long have you been scrapbooking?I started scrapbooking in earnest three years ago, but have been collecting supplies for about five years. I've had a love affair with school supplies my entire life so transitioning to papercrafting as a hobby seemed like a natural fit!
How would you define your style? In my design, I strive for a colorful, classic feel with a little bit of bling or a fun embellishment thrown in for a twist. I love to add that special, extra bit of detail that elevates my page to the next level.
What is your favorite technique? My favorite technique right now is to add stitching to my pages and cards. I like to use a variety of stitching including: machine stitching, faux stitching using paint pens, or even a little hand embroidery.
If you were stranded on a remote island and magically had a small handful of scrapbook supplies with you (sounds like paradise, right?!), what would products would you not be able to live without? My camera is an essential scrapbooking tool, because my pages start with the pictures and develop from there. Other "must haves" include my Making Memories tool kit. I can't function without my tweezers, paper piercer, or small metal ruler. (I even use the setting mat in this kit as a drink coaster!) Also, I love creating embellishments from patterned paper so I would need a big stack of it and my extra sharp, detail, cutting scissors. (Maybe some band-aids too, as I often injure myself in the creative process!)
What do you like most about your craft?I love creating projects for my family and friends that share the story behind the pictures that I have taken. To me, scrapbooking takes a static picture and elevates it to the next level with the addition of journaling and a cohesive design. Searching out the perfect embellishment or patterned paper to complement my design is a great added bonus.
Do you have Favorite scrapbook manufactures, if so, who are they?My favorite manufacturers include Basic Grey, My Minds Eye, and Cosmo Cricket. I'm especially fond of manufacturers that make great "B side" papers that coordinate with their main designs.
Tell us about your scrapbooking process. When I start to create a layout, I start with the picture and then focus on the story or emotion it conveys. I only scrapbook the photos that "speak to me" and don't worry about trying to keep up chronologically or trying to scrapbook every photo. I often sketch out the basic idea of a layout before starting and always carry a small notebook with me to jot down layout ideas. While scrapbooking I love to indulge in peanut butter M&Ms and skim milk - that balances out nutritionally, right?
Where do you find your inspiration?Inspiration comes to me from a variety of sources including: layout ideas from inspiring pictures; color combinations from fashion spreads; and new techniques from scrapbooking magazines. This is a tough question though, because I feel like I find inspiration in almost everything around me!
Name 3 personal quirks!1) I only eat green bananas, if a banana is even slightly yellow I won't touch it. I blame this quirk on too many car trips as a kid with over ripe bananas. 2) I always use the parking brake, just in case, even on the flattest of surfaces. 3) I have an ongoing love affair with Purell. Using a little Purell makes everything seem clean and sanitized, even if it's not!
Name 3 adjectives that describe your personality.1) Detail oriented 2) Thoughtful 3) Outgoing
What's the average amount of time spent scrapbooking or crafting during a given week?Typically, I try to eek out 6-8 hours a week during preschool hours, nap time, or after bedtime. Luckily, I have a very supportive husband who helps out around the house so that I can take time for my hobby!
Visually describe your craft workspace... what's your organization (or lack thereof!) techniques? My craft space is a table in a nook of our upstairs family room. My basic organization style is to group items by "type", then by color. During a project, my work area is barely recognizable with supplies spread out everywhere! However, I find I'm much more effective if I force myself to "clean up" in between projects so that I can start fresh the next time. Part of my supplies (embellishments/inks/tools) are stored in a closet near my work area, with the remainder (patterned paper/letters/stickers) in a variety of storage containers around my table. Patterned paper is stored in vertical files by manufacturer and my ribbon "collection" is sorted by color and hangs from rings. Any leftover bits are stored in jars on my table. I love the visual stimulus of the colorful paper and ribbon arranged around my workspace! My personal theme song would be "These are the Days" by the 10,000 Maniacs. The lyrics really speak to me, reminding me how truly "blessed and lucky" I am and that every day (even the challenging ones!) offers memories that I will treasure. |
