Judges' Notes

Fabulous layouts- love the larger sizes of photos, and embellishments and the sweet touch of adding stitching to her projects really makes them feel personal and meaningful. The way Becky has found easy ways to dress up products is really inventive and fun- see the embellished paper and the dressed up butterfly on the ‘Beautiful’ layout, or the stitched personalized canvas envelope on the ‘all mine’ layout. Becky’s photo memory project of an explosion mini book was handmade and really clever with different layers including a clear layer. I can’t wait to see the next thing she finds a way to customize- so I can try it myself! Her little ‘girly’ additions of rhinestones, and glitter and such are sweet and fun.

I have been married to my college sweetheart for 15 years and we have 3 children: Grace 11, Cole 7, and Tess 4. They are my greatest joy and at the same time my hardest job! For my sanity, I work one day a week as a Physical Therapist. My husband and I also farm cherries commercially and have 2 horses in East Wenatchee, WA. I have a love/hate relationship with my daily exercise routine and running. In addition to scrapbooking, I love interior design and when I am not remodeling my own home, I help my friends with theirs!

How long have you been scrapbooking?

14 years

How would you define your "style"?

First and foremost, I am a perfectionist. Therefore I love straight lines and linear designs but, how boring is that? After the lines are straight and the paper matches perfectly, I like to add custom embellishments like hand or machine stitching, distressing, ribbon, or glitter. I want the focus to be on the pictures so I frequently enlarge my favorites and use the "white space" of the picture for a bold title or embellishment.

What is your favorite technique?

My favorite technique hands down, is distressing! I love to use sandpaper, ink, or paint to rough up pictures, papers, and embellishments. Simply distressing the entire outside edge of the scrapbook page adds so much depth for little investment or time. This technique can also be used on any type of page depending on the medium used and the amount.

If you were stranded on a remote island and magically had a small handful of scrapbook supplies with you (sounds like paradise, right?!), what would products would you not be able to live without?

Textured cardstock, chipboard alphabets, distressing inks, and ribbon.

What do you like most about your craft?

Scrapbooking is an artistic outlet that allows me to escape from my daily responsibilities of mother, wife, physical therapist, and orchardist. AND, the end result benefits my family for generations! My husband and children adore their scrapbooks and I know that they will always know how much I loved them from both the words that I write and the effort spent creating each page.

Is there a particular technique or idea you would like to share with our web readers?

Don't be afraid to try hand or machine stitching! Just like with distressing, it adds so much with so little. If an embellishment has a dashed line border, hand stitch over the dashed line to add texture. Use templates to punch designs to stitch or get out the sewing machine and zigzag stitch a ribbon border.

Do you have Favorite scrapbook manufactures, if so, who are they?

As of today, my favorite scrapbook manufacturers are: Basic Grey, Cosmo Cricket, Fancy Pants, and Bazzil.

Tell us about your scrapbooking process.

I start my creative process with the pictures and decide what look and feel I want the page to have to convey the memories for years to come. I choose cardstock and patterned paper (that has to match perfectly). I decide on the location and type of title to complement the style and lastly, choose embellishments to enhance the page. I work chronologically and my kids each have their own individual albums from birth to present. Unfortunately my kids no longer nap so I scrapbook at all different times of the day and evening, whenever I can sneak away! A couple times a year, I go away with girlfriends to scrapbook all weekend long.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Scrapbook magazines and new products.

Name 3 personal quirks!

Perfectionist, stick my tongue out when I concentrate, and I chew my fingernails!

Name 3 adjectives that describe your personality.

Nurturing, loyal, organized.

What’s the average amount of time spent scrapbooking or crafting during a given week?

I probably spend an average of 5 hours a week crafting but some weeks zero and others more! My favorite time spent is on scrapbook weekends!

Visually describe your craft workspace... what’s your organization (or lack thereof!) techniques?

I love my scrapbook office! I scrapbook on an antique oak school teachers desk that my mother re-finished for me. Behind the desk I use Crop-in-Style organizational cubes in different configurations. My favorite organization tool is the Clip-It-Up which sits on my desk with all my alphabet stickers hanging, organized by color. My cardstock is organized by color and patterned paper by manufacturer and theme. My embellishments are organized in either file folders or fishing tackle boxes by theme. When I am scrapbooking Valentines, it is so easy to pull out the love folder and have all my embellishments in one spot to choose from. My husband tells everyone that I have more supplies than Craft Warehouse, could that be? I love to shop for scrapbook supplies as much as I love to scrapbook!
