Knit Mittens and Beanie

Shopping List

  • 2 x50g balls of Palette Yarn (#043)
  • 1 x50g ball of Palette Yarn (#033)
  • 6.50mm (US 10.5) Knitting Needles
  • Yarn Needle

Abbreviations

St/s - stitch/es, K - Knit, P - Purl, stocking st - 1 row K, 1 row P, RS - right side, WS - wrong side, sl - slip st purlways, tog - together, K2tog - knit 2 sts together, K3tog - knit 3 sts together, psso - pass slipped stitch over, inc - increase one st by knitting into front and back of stitch, rem - remain/ing, rep - repeat, cont - continue, beg - begin/ning.

TENSION (GAUGE):

13 sts and 16 rows to 10 cm (4 ins) over stocking st, using 6.50mm (US 10.5) knitting needles and MC.

NOTE: Correct tension/gauge is essential for successful handknit.

Instructions:

MITTENS (make 2)
Using 6.50mm (US 10.5) needles and CC, cast on 23 sts. Work 6 rows stocking st. Break off CC.

Using MC for rem, 7th row - knit.
8th row (WS) - K1, *P1, K1, rep from * to end.
9th row (RS) - K2, *P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1. Rep 8th and 9th rows twice, then 8th row once. Work 6 rows stocking st.

Shape for thumb

  • 1st row - K14, turn. 2nd row - P5, turn. 3rd row - Inc in first st, K3, inc in last st, turn.
  • Cont on these 7 sts for thumb. Work 5 rows stokcing st, beg with a purl row.
  • 7th row - Sl 1, K2tog, psso, K1, K3tog = 3 sts. Cast off purlways. With RS facing, knit up 2 sts at base of thumb (where st was inc) then knit across sts on left hand needle.
  • Cont in stocking st (beg with purl row) on these 20 sts, until work measures 11 cm (4.5 ins) from beg of MC, ending with a purl row.

Shape top

  • 1st row - K1, (sl 1, K1, psso, K5, K2tog) twice, K1 = 16 sts
  • 2nd row - Purl
  • 3rd row - K1 (sl 1, K1, psso, K3, K2tog) twice, K1 = 12 sts
  • 4th row - Purl. Cast (bind) off knitways.

FINISHING: DO NOT PRESS. Using yarn needle, darn in ends. Using yarn needle, MC and a flat seam, join side edge seam, then join thumb seam. Using back-stitch and MC, join seam at top of mitten. If desired, fold rows worked in CC over onto right side to form a cuff.

BEANIE

  • Using 6.50mm (US 10.5) needles and CC, cast on 59 sts. Work 8 rows stocking st. Break off CC.
  • Using MC for rem, 9th row (RS) - Knit.
  • 10th row (WS) - K1, *P1, K1, rep from * to end.
  • 11th row (RS) - K2, *P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1. Rep 10th and 11th rows twice, then 10th row once. Work in stocking st, until work measures 19 cm from beg, ending with a purl row.

Shape crown

  • 1st row - K2, *K2tog, K1, rep from * to end = 40 sts
  • 2nd row - Purl
  • 3rd row - *K2tog, rep from * to end = 20 sts
  • 4th row - Purl
  • 5th row - *K2tog, rep from * to end = 10 sts
  • 6th row - Purl. Break off yarn leaving a long length
  • Thread yarn through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.

FINISHING: DO NOT PRESS

  • Using yarn needle, darn in ends
  • Using yarn needle, MC and back stitch, join seam reversing seam for brim.
