ABBREVIATIONS

St/s - stitch/es, K - Knit, P - Purl, stocking st - 1 row K, 1 row P, RS - right side, WS - wrong side, beg - begin/ning, alt - alternate, M1 - make one stitch by picking up loop that lies before next st, place on left hand needle and then knit into back of loop, rep - repeat.

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS

C12F - slip next 6 sts onto cable needle and leave at front of work, K6, then K6 from cable needle.

C12B - slip next 6 sts onto cable needle and leave at back of work, K6, then K6 from cable needle.

Felted Bag Knit Project

TENSION/GAUGE

17 sts and 24 rows to 10cms/4 ins over stocking st, using US10 knitting needles. NOTE: Correct tension/gauge is essential for a successful handknit.

Directions

Create Bag (beg at base)
Using US10 circular needle, cast on 50 sts, join into a round, taking care not to twist sts.
Note: work in rounds, not rows.
1st and alt rounds: (RS) - Knit.
2nd round - *K5, M1, rep from * to last st of round = 60sts.
4th round - *K6, M1, rep from * to last st of round = 70sts.
6th round - *K7, M1, rep from * to last st of roundĀ = 80sts.
8th round - *K8, M1, rep from * to last st of round = 90sts.
10th round - *K9, M1, rep from * to last st of round = 100sts.
12th round - *K10, M1, rep from * to last st of round = 110sts.
Place a colored thread around last st.
Continue in rounds without shaping for 5cms/2ins from colored thread.

Next round - *K11, M1, rep from * to last st of round = 120sts.

Place a colored thread around last st.

Continue in rounds without shaping for 5cms/2ins from colored thread.

Next round - *K12, M1, rep from * to last st of round = 130sts.

Place colored thread around last st.

Continue in rounds without shaping for 5cms/2ins from colored thread.

Next round - *K13, M1, rep from * to last st of round = 140sts.

Place colored thread around last st.

Continue in rounds without shaping for 5cms/2ins from colored thread.

Next round - *K14, M1, rep from * to last st of round = 150sts.

Place colored thread around last st.

Continue in rounds without shaping for 5cms/2ins from colored thread.

Next round - *K15, M1, rep from * to last st of round = 160sts.

Continue in rounds without shaping until work measures 46cms/18.5ins from beg.

Next round - Purl.

Knit 5 rounds. Cast/bind off knitways.

Handles (make 2)
Using pair of US10 needles, cast on 18sts. Work 4 rows stocking st.

Beg cable pattern - 1st row (RS) - C12F, K6.

Work 7 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

9th row - K6, C12B.

Work 7 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

Last 16 rows form cable pattern.

Continue in cable pattern until work measures 87cms/35ins from beg, ending with a 1st or 9th pattern row and allowing enough yarn to work the following: work a further 4 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row. Cast/bind off loosely purlways.

Finishing

DO NOT PRESS. Using yarn needle, darn in ends. Using yarn needle and back-stitch, stitch cast on edge to close bottom of bag. Fold last 5 rounds to inside of bag at ridge, slip stitch into position. Do not sew handles to bag. Place bag and handles in washing machine with a small amount of laundry detergent. Wash on regular hot cycle, checking regularly until bag piece measures approx. 25x30cms/10x12ins. Handle pieces measure 75cms/30ins. Stretch bag into shape and measurement. Dry naturally in shade. Stitch handles in position to outside of bagĀ as pictured.
