Needles
A pair 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Knitting Needles for both items, a pair 6.00mm (US 10), (UK 4) Knitting Needles for Beret or sizes that give correct tension/gauge.
Materials
A Yarn Needle; Matching plain yarn for sewing seams.
TENSION/gauge
14 sts and 40 rows to 10 cms/4 ins over 2 x 2 rib, using ?4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Knitting Needles.
Note - Correct tension/gauge is essential for a successful handknit.
Abbreviations
St/s - stitch/es, K - Knit, P - Purl, garter st - every row knit, stocking st - 1 row K, 1 row P, RS - right side, WS - wrong side, rep - repeat, inc - increase one st by knitting into the front and then back of same st, beg - begin/ning, K2tog - knit 2 sts together, P2tog - purl 2 sts together, rem - remain/ning, M1 - make one st by picking up the loop before next st, place on left hand needle and then knit into the back of loop, cont - continue, foll - follow/ing, alt - alternate.
CREATE
Beret
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles and C1, cast on 82 sts.
1st row - K2, * P2, K2, rep from * to end.
2nd row - P2, * K2, P2, rep from * to end.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows for 2 x 2 rib 6 times, then 1st row once = 15 rows 2 x 2 rib in total.
Next row - K1, * inc in next st, rep from * to last st, K1 = 162 sts. Break off C1.
Change to 6.00mm (US 10), (UK 4) Needles.
Using C2, work 12 rows stocking st, beg with a knit row.
Shape crown - 1st row - K1, * K8, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 = 146 sts.
Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
5th row - K1, * K7, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 = 130 sts.
Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
9th row - K1, * K6, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 = 114 sts.
Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
13th row - K1, * K5, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 = 98 sts.
14th row - Purl.
15th row - K1, * K4, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 = 82 sts.
16th row - Purl.
17th row - K1, * K3, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 = 66 sts.
18th row - Purl.
19th row - K1, * K2, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 = 50 sts.
20th row - P1, * P2tog, P1, rep from * to last st, P1 = 34 sts.
21st row - K1, * K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 = 18 sts.
22nd row - * K2tog, rep from * to end = 9 sts. Break off C2.
Using C1, 23rd row - K1, (K2tog) 4 times = 5 sts.
Cont in stocking st on these 5 sts for 3 cms/1 in, ending with a purl row.
Break off yarn leaving a long end. Run end through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.
FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Using yarn needle, darn in ends. Using yarn needle, matching plain yarn and back stitch, join back seam, matching colour changes.
CREATE
Fingerless Gloves (make 2)
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles and C1, cast on 26 sts.
Work 12 rows 2 x 2 rib as for Beret. Break off C1.
Using C2, work in stocking st until work measures 10 cms/
4 ins from beg, ending with a knit row.
Next row (WS) - P2tog, purl to last 2 sts, P2tog = 24 sts.
Beg thumb shaping - 1st row - K12, M1, K12 = 25 sts.
2nd and foll alt rows - Purl.
3rd row - K12, M1, K1, M1, K12 = 27 sts.
5th row - K12, M1, K3, M1, K12 = 29 sts.
7th row - K12, M1, K5, M1, K12 = 31 sts.
9th row - K12, M1, K7, M1, K12 = 33 sts.
11th row - Knit.
13th row - K12, M1, K9, M1, K12 = 35 sts.
15th row - Knit.
17th row - K12, M1, K11, M1, K12 = 37 sts.
19th row - Knit.
21st row - K12, M1, K13, M1, K12 = 39 sts.
22nd row - Purl.
23rd row - K25, turn.
24th row - P11, turn.
25th row - Inc in first st, K9, inc in next st, turn.
26th row - P13, turn.
Work 6 rows stocking st on these 13 sts.
Break off C2.
Using C1, knit 4 rows garter st.
Cast/bind off loosely knitways.
Place all sts to the same needle, taking care that thumb is in the centre = 28 sts.
With RS facing and using C2, Next row - K14, turn, cast on 4 sts, turn, knit to end = 32 sts.
Work 17 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
Break off C2.
Using C1, knit 4 rows garter st.
Cast/bind off loosely knitways.
FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Using yarn needle, darn in ends. Fold glove in half and using yarn needle, matching plain yarn and back stitch, join side seam. Join thumb seam, sewing the cast on sts of main section of glove to the inc sts on the thumb for form a gusset.
