Flower Bib Necklace Project

Create your own one of a kind statement necklace! This bib style necklace is very trendy right now, you can make your own in under an hour and with just a few simple supplies.

Supplies:

  • cotton fabric in your choice of color and pattern. (Each flower will need a 1" x 16" strip, you'll make 5 flowers for a necklace)
  • 2 9"x12" Sheets of felt (similar color to your fabric)
  • 1 yard of ribbon to match
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • rhinestones, buttons, or other for flower centers, if desired
  • a handful of large hole beads, if desired
  • scissors

Instructions
Step 1.

Cut approx. 2 1/2" squares of felt from felt sheet x5. Cut or tear strips of fabric; tie a knot in one end of each strip of fabric and cut off the short tail

Step 2.

Add a dot of hot glue to the center of 1 of the cut squares of felt and place the knot of one of your fabric strips into the glue and hold a few seconds until set.
Now twist the tail of fabric and hold twist in one hand. Apply a ring of hot glue around the knot on the felt, then begin coiling the twisted ribbon around the knot and into the hot glue.
Continue adding more hot glue, and coiling the fabric around and around all the way to the end.

Step 3.

Use scissors to cut away the excess felt from around your twisted fabric flower. If desired, you can use a small dot of hot glue to secure rhinestone, or button, or beads to center of fabric flower.

Step 4.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the remaining squares of felt and strips of fabric

Step 5.

Cut your 2nd sheet of felt in half. arrange your 5 fabric flowers on the felt. Should be in a slight arch- like the bottom edge of a bib. Secure your flowers to the felt with hot glue. Make sure the flowers are as close to each other as possible without overlapping.
Use scissors to cut away excess felt. Undercut a bit so the felt does not show. Careful not to cut the felt apart where the flowers meet.

Step 6

Turn your flower bib over and apply a line of hot glue from end to end following the arch shape. the hot glue will run the length of the felt and cut across the middle of the backside of each flower.
Find the middle of your yard of ribbon, and lay it in the center of the hot glue line and gently lay down all the way across the hot glue on each side. You may need to fold or pinch the ribbon a bit to force it around the arch shape. You should now have the 2 loose ends of ribbon trailing of either end of the bib.

Step 7

Cover the entire backside of the bib with hot glue and place on to the other half sheet of felt. When glue has set, carefully cut away excess felt, careful NOT to cut off the ribbon ends.

step 8

If desired, string on a few beads to either end of the ribbon. Trim the ends of ribbon and create a small knot on the very ends of the ribbon.

When you are ready to wear your bib necklace, simply tie the two ends of ribbon around your neck.

TIPS:

Now that you know the basics, you can experiment with other materials and styles. Consider including charms, feathers, pearls, and more in your creation.

Or, use the twisted flowers for other projects- glue to head bands or hair barrettes. Make a lapel pin, or use as embellishment on clothing. Maybe add to the cover of a scrapbook, or on a frame to dress them up a bit.
