Instructions
- Choose your artwork. Art prints and photos work well because of the size and thickness. Scrapbook paper or fiber paper work well also, but need to be sealed with Mod Podge first. Use care when choosing your image, as cutting the lines may distort your design and small details may be lost.
- Sand any rough edges of your wood tile and wipe clean with a tack cloth, taking care to remove all dust from the grooves.
- If you will be framing your tile, test the fit of your tile in the frame. Remove the glass and bend back the closing staples. Place the frame over the tile, checking to see if it easily fits. Adjust the staples as necessary to achieve an easy fit. Set the frame aside until step 11.
- Paint the tile board, using the darkest color of your image. This color will become the “grout†of your tile. Black works well for most images. Paint the inside of each groove, overlapping onto the tile sections about 1/4". Paint the edges as well.
- Place your picture on the tile board to see how it will fit when cut apart. As you center it, try to place it so the tile lines do not interfere with the design.
- Working on the far right edge, mark the outside cutting line with a pencil. Mark the top and bottom of the line you will cut. Remove the print and cut, using your mark as your guide. We recommend using a rotary paper cutter. Continue working around your picture, doing one side, then the top and the inside cuts. Lay your pieces on the board to make sure they fit properly.
- Use a paper glue stick to glue each section of your picture in place. Make sure the edges are secure. Be careful not to get the glue on top of the picture. A baby wipe will take off any excess adhesive.
- Find a place where you can leave your tile board undisturbed and away from children, pets, and dust. Cover your work surface with cardboard or newspaper, as the Enviro-Tex will drip. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, mix equal parts of each bottle of the Enviro-Tex. Stir the product, scrapping the sides and bottom well. It is very important to mix the product well. Please read the Enviro-Tex instructions carefully before starting!
- Make sure your board is sitting level. We recommend placing it on top of several empty paper cups. Pour the mixed product onto the tile board slowly. There will be bubbles, but as you gently spread the product out they will begin to pop. Gently breathing or blowing on the bubbles will help them pop. Use your embossing heat tool to pop bubbles quickly and easily. Take care not to hold it too close to the surface to prevent scorching. Additional bubbles may appear; use a pin to pop or slide them off the edge, or use your embossing heat tool. Use a craft stick or scrap of heavy paper as a spatula to spread the product.
- After the board has set for about 10 minutes, slide a scrap of paper or a tooth pick down the cracks to drain the excess resin. This is what creates the tile look. You may have to do this several times. Spread the excess resin around the corners and edges or to other low spots. Be careful not to lift the edges of your picture, as they will not stick back down. Continue to work around your board, scraping the drips off the bottom edges and making sure that the entire surface and all edges are covered.
- If you want to frame your picture, now is a good time to set it on top of the tile. The picture will continue to drip for a while, and that is okay. It will take at least 24 hours for the board to dry completely, so work in an area where it can be left undisturbed. You may want to set a box over it to keep dust or lint from settling on it while wet.
