Living Arrangement

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Clean the Vase and rocks, making sure to rinse away any soap residue.
  2. Gently turn the Peace Lily onto a work surface, allowing the soil to fall away from the main root ball. Work the soil from the bottom, away from the tighter root structure near the top. Gently pull the plant clusters apart, keeping the roots of each intact as much as possible. (Don’t worry too much of roots are broken near the ends, as you will trim these later.)
  3. Select a plant cluster that suits the size of your container and tray. The cluster should be no larger than the bottom of the plant tray for your vase. Pinch off dead leaves and any damaged roots.
  4. Wash the root system thoroughly. It is very important that every bit of soil is removed from the roots! For best results, we recommend soaking the roots in water overnight.
  5. Cut an opening in the bottom of the plant tray and place the plant roots through. If you are using the round trays, the opening provided should be sufficient. The hole needs to be large enough for the roots to enter freely, yet small enough to keep the top of the plant from falling through. The plant should be supported at the point slightly below stem level.
  6. Place decorative rocks or marbles in the bottom of the vase by the handful (pouring them directly into the glass container may cause it to break). Fill the container about 3/4 full with chlorine-free water at room temperature. Use distilled water, or water that has set out in an open container for 24 hours to remove chlorine.
  7. Place the plant assembly in the container. If necessary, trim roots so they do not touch the bottom. Leave approximately 2 inches of room between the plant assembly and the water level. The water level should be just below where the stems and roots meet.
  8. Slip tubing through the opening in the plant assembly. The bottom of the tube should extend down into the air space between the plant assembly and water, without touching the water. This will provide fresh air and a convenient opening for feeding the fish.
  9. Place decorative rocks or marbles in the plant assembly, taking care to not make it too heavy.

CARING FOR YOUR PET

  • Contrary to popular belief, your fish will need to be fed regularly. The Betta will nibble the roots, but cannot live from them alone. Follow the feeding instructions provided by your local pet store.
  • It’s important that you leave about 2 inches of space between the bottom of the plant assembly and the top of the water. Bettas have what is called a labyrinth organ, which means they can breath “our” air. They need this space at the surface of their water in order to live. Be sure the tubing is placed properly to provide fresh air.
  • Change out half of the water at least once a week, more often in smaller vases. Make sure to add chlorine-free water at room temperature.
  • Keep your arrangement out of direct sunlight. Your arrangement should not be cooler than 70° F.
