Burlap Flower

Burlap is all the rage right now.  Want to create a little rosette embellishment to accent anything you wish?  Flowers look great on clothing, headbands, handbags, pillows, wall art and more.  Time to create!

Supplies:

  • Burlap
  • Scrap of felt
  • Needle
  • Thread or embroidery floss
  • Glue (optional)
  • Pin back (also optional)

Instructions:

1.  Cut bias stripe of burlap approx 2” wide by 19-20” long.  Cut ends on an angle.

2.  Using needle and thread, sew a running stitch  approx 3/8-1/2” along the long edge.  Because burlap is loosely woven you will have to do a little backstitch to get started, because a knot will not hold.  Don’t cut thread when you reach end.

3.  Gather up and roll into flower shape.  When you are happy with the look sew through the base multiple times until the flower is secure. Doesn’t have to look good, because it will be covered.

4.  Cut a circle of felt large enough to cover back. Glue or sew in place.

5.  Optional – glue on pin back.

Now you know the technique – have fun making different sizes by varying the length and width.
