Minkee Throw Project

Minkee Throw

Shopping List

we sell a ready-to-go kit, which includes:

  • 8 strips, 5 1/2" x 30", of Minkee
  • 5/8 yd Minkee for outer borders
  • 1/3 yd Minkee for 2 1/2" border
  • 1/4 yd Minkee for binding

You will need to purchase fabric for the backing. We recommend 1 1/4 yds of Minkee for this.

Instructions

Finished Size: 45" x 55"

  1. Sew the Minkee strips together in your order of preference. The kit is designed to coordinate, so the order is purely your preference.

  2. Trim the center of the quilt so that it is 30" wide.

  3. Cut the 1/3 yard of border fabric into 4 strips each 2 1/2" wide. Stitch the borders to the sides of the quilt first, and then to the top and bottom. Cut the 5/8 yd of Minkee into 4 strips each 5 1/2" wide. Add to the sides first, and then to the top and Bottom.

  4. Lay the quilt front and backing wrong sides together and pin liberally (insert batting if desired, but be sure to use a spray adhesive so it doesn't slide). Quilt "in the ditch" or as your prefer.

  5. Cut the 1/4 yard of Minkee binding fabric into 2" wide strips. Seam these and add them to the quilt by stitching in a narrow seam, folding it over and under and then stitching down on the top or bottom side using a serpentine stitch.

HINTS

Use a walking foot and pin liberally - this fabric moves! The use of batting is optional - two layers of Minkee may be all that you want or need - it will be heavy. We recommend a size 90 universal machine needle. It works well on the knit and is heavy enough to do the machine quilting to finish.

Minkee Throw Alternative Layouts

The 4 Alternate Layouts show will give you opportunity to personalize your Cuddle Throw! Each layout is planned using all 8 strips. In three of the layouts, some of the 30" strips are cut into 2 sections of 15" each, in the fourth layout each 30" strip is cut into one 10" and one 20" section. Follow the kit instructions for adding borders. Try these ideas, or create your own designs!

The lettering and numbering system used, generally shows you where to begin, i.e., which strips to sew to the backing and batting fabrics first. You will need to determine which strips are the A, B, C, or D color prior to cutting any of the strips. Abbreviated instructions are noted below each of the alternate layouts.

Be sure to use as small a seam as possible when sewing strips together. The layouts are planned so that the same "sew and flip" directions from the original kit can be used. ENJOY!

Option 1

Cut 3 strips into 15" sections. Attach using the sew & flip method beginning with strip B1 positioned 5" above the horizontal center line on the quilt, end with strip D2. Then continue with strip A1 and end with strip A2.

Option 2

Cut 3 strips into 15" sections. Attach using the sew & flip method beginning with strip D1 positioned 5" below and 10" above the horizontal center line on the quilt, end with strip C2. Then continue to add the 30" strips beginning with either B3 or C3.

Option 3

Cut 2 both A and B strips into 15" sections. Cut 1C and D strip into 15" sections. You will have a C and D strip left as 30" pieces. Seam the designated A strips to the C & B Strips as illustrated making sure the nap is going in the same direction. Seam the B strips to the A & D strips in the same manner. Assemble the throw as directed in the Cuddle Throw kit treating each seamed strip as a complete 30" strip.

Option 4

Cut 30" strip into a 20" section and a 20" section. Seam the sections as shown above paying careful attention to the nap of the Cuddle. Assemble the throw as directed n the Cuddle Throw kit treating each seamed strip as a complete 30" strip.
