Paper Lantern Luminaries

Half the fun of this project is that you can put your own spin on it using your favorite paper or vellum, embellishments, paper punches and ribbon.  The luminaries really standout when you add the battery operated tealights.  Here's what you need to get started.

Supplies

  • Paper or Vellum (cut into 4"x6" pieces)
  • Ribbon
  • Super Tape or Red Line Tape 1/4" wide adhesive
  • Glue dots
  • Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher Tool and Tiny Staples
  • 4 pack battery operated tealights from Darice
  • Thin cording or twine

Instructions

 1.  Take your paper and punch it using the punch of your choice.  Cut a 5" length of Red Line tape and wrap it around the outside plastic of the tea light.  Press firmly.

2.  Turn the paper or vellum over, add a 4" strip of red line super tacky tape close to one edge.  Once again, press firmly.

3.  Remove the redline film from the tealight, but not from the paper just yet.  Be careful...it's sticky!

4.  Line up the bottom edge of the punched paper or vellum with the bottom edge of the tea light.  This tape is super strong and very sticky.  Once you lay the paper down it will not come back easily (you get one shot to make it right).

5.  When the paper has gone all the way around, you can peel off the red line film from the paper and finish rolling the paper around the tea light and press gently to seal by taking your fingers inside of the paper tube.  Press seam with fingers and thumb so the paper stays in place.

6.  Set the tube upright, gently squeeze the top edges together.  Lay tube down so you are looking at the backside...fold back the top 1/2" of the crimped paper.

7.  Using the narrow ribbon, twine or cording you choose, tie ends together to create a loop.

8.  Hook the loop you created with narrow ribbon or twine under the folded flap at the top edge of the crimped tube.  Fold paper back over.

9.  Use Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher tool to staple the fold shut, securing the ribbon or twine in the fold.

10.  The hanger is for your luminary to be displayed!

11.  Add decorative ribbon or embellishments.  You can use glue dots to secure.

Now you're done!  You can make a few of these for an outdoor garden party and let everyone take one home with them.  Have fun with it!
